The Greater Wheeling Chapter of the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) will hold its Wednesday, August 14 2013 meeting at the White Palace at Wheeling Park, Wheeling WV. White Palace is located inside Wheeling Park at 1801 National Rd, Wheeling, WV 26003 (map via bing).
Speaker and Topic
Ben Hitt is native to the Ohio Valley. He graduated from West Liberty State College (now West Liberty University) in 1966 with a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry. He received a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from West Virginia University in 1970. After receiving his degree, he held academic positions at Stanford and the University of Cincinnati. In the mid 1980s he became interested in extracting information from data and has pursued that as a career ever since. During the course of that career he has founded or helped to found several companies devoted to Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery. He is an inventor of nine US Patents and the author or co-author of over thirty peer review papers.
That the ability of the computer to collect and store data has far outpaced the capability to garner information from data has been known for quit a while. For the last couple decades, the prime focus on this problem was the development of tools and algorithms that aid in the extraction of information from data. However, the shear size and complexity of the data has shifted the focus to simply understanding the data and emergence of so-called Data Science.
In this presentation we will cover the following: What is Data Science? As with any scientific discipline, Data Science has its own set of descriptors.
Who is a Data Scientist? A Data Scientist should possess a particular set of skills.
What is Big Data? Big Data does not simply mean huge amounts of data.
What are some analytic approaches? Given the size and unstructured nature of Big
Data, classical statistical methods break down.
What tools are available? Fortunately, as Big Data has emerged, so have the tools to deal with it.
The overarching goal of this presentation is the de-mystification of Data Science and Big Data. If an enterprise isn’t facing these already, having to deal with is inevitable.
We will meet on the first floor of the White Palace. Social time, SIG groups, and registration will be from 5:30 – 6:00 p.m. The buffet style dinner will begin at approximately 6:00 p.m. and the Ed Session and Main Presentation will start after the meal. Cost for the evening is$18.00 for AITP members, $10.00 for AITP student members, and $23.00 for guests. We will have our 50/50 drawing and door prizes for those in attendance.
